Sarah Slavick received her BA in Studio Art from Wesleyan University and an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute. Slavick received a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant in Painting in 2006, as well as grants from the Artist Resource Trust Fund (2005 and 2000), the Blanche Colman Foundation (2007) and artist residency fellowships at CAMAC in France (2015), the Baer Art Center in Iceland (2013), the Kunstnarhuset Messen in Norway (2011), and the Millay Colony (2001) In Philadelphia, she also received the Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial Challenge Art Award in 1992.
Slavick’s work has exhibited her work locally in Boston, nationally, and internationally and is in private and corporoate collections. Slavick has participated in the larger regional community through both commercial and non-profit exhibitions, as well as open studio events, charity auctions and benefits and acting as visiting critic, juror and teacher. Sarah Slavick is a faculty member in the Fine Arts Department of Lesley University’s College of Art and Design (1999-Present).
Described by the Boston Globe as “a kind of abstract portrait of the psyche in all its dense, unknowable layers,” Slavick’s work references nature visually and conceptually in her paintings and drawings. While her work is abstract, she references cell biology, accretion of geological formations, botanical structures and the taxonomy of the natural world. Many ingredients go into her creative process, not only the physical materials, but also raw stimuli from outside sources. Much of her work is inspired from literature, women’s studies, the sciences, philosophy, and the political arena. Currently, she is exploring the theme of water through layers of colors, marks, and movements.
